instead of a dedication

say it yourself, not through a song

sending someone a song is a way of saying something without having to say it. it works because the songwriter already found the words, and because a dedication can carry a feeling you would not put in a message of your own. this is the other approach.

the difference

a song
said beautifully, and said for everyone
your voice
said badly, and only about one person

ten thousand people have sent that same track to somebody, and it meant something slightly different every time. your own voice saying the actual thing is less elegant and it is only about one person.

it is also harder, which is most of the point. there is no lyric to hide behind and no way to imply something without saying it.

how this works

record straight into the browser, address it to a first name, and it joins a public archive after it is checked. the submitter is not publicly named, there are no accounts, and nobody replies. the person it is for probably never hears it — what happens instead is that strangers do. more about how it works.
